Sydney Uni Basketball Sign Matt Wacher to High Performance Program

Matt Wacher has joined Sydney Uni Basketball following an impressive junior career which saw the local prospect represent both NSW and Australia.

Wacher captained the U16 NSW Metro team to bronze at the Australian U16 Championships in 2018, leading to his selection for the U15 Australia team that won gold at the FIBA Oceania Championships in Papua New Guinea.

More recently, Wacher was selected in the U18 and U20 NSW Metro team set to compete at the 2020 and 2021 Australian Championships (canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic). Despite not getting the chance to represent NSW at these levels, Wacher was recently selected in the AAGPS Firsts Team after leading Scots College to the AAGPS Championship last year.

Off the court, Wacher enjoyed a great academic year and will begin studying a Bachelor of Commerce & Engineering at Sydney University this year.

“I'm really excited to be joining Sydney University and their new basketball High Performance Program,” said Wacher.

“Joining Sydney University will give me the ability to continue playing with and against the best players around the country, as well as learning from great coaches while pursuing my academic goals.”

Sydney Uni Basketball High Performance Program Head Coach Tom Garlepp spoke highly of Wacher’s addition to the program.

“The addition of Matt to Sydney Uni Basketball is an exciting one. Matt is not only a skilled player with great character, but he has been a winner throughout his junior basketball journey at state and national levels,” said Garlepp.

“Having a leader like Matt join the group is great as not only will he work to lift his own game, but he will lift the players around him.”

Wacher joins the likes Ryan Abbott, Inez Tanoi and Holly Wills, as recent NSW prospects to have committed to the new Sydney Uni Basketball High Performance Program.

The Sydney Uni Basketball High Performance Program is designed to provide additional opportunities (on top of traditional club and state/national program commitments) to squad members, ensuring their studies and future are can be adequately supported while they continue to develop on the court. By providing opportunities to represent Sydney University in competitions such as the UBL, squad members will also benefit from the chance to play against talented basketballers across the country, gaining additional exposure in Australia’s basketball landscape.
