Southern Design Inter-Varsity 3×3 Invitational

The Southern Design Inter-Varsity 3×3 Invitational is set to hit campus on Friday 27th November, with a number of talented teams and individuals ready to battle it out for IV glory.

The day will be split into a morning (9am-12pm) and afternoon session (12.30-3pm), which will see both men (morning) and women (afternoon) take to the courts for some 3×3 basketball action. The afternoon session will also include a 3pt shootout which you can learn more about below.

Both sessions will be broadcast live via the Sydney Uni Basketball Facebook page. Make sure you’re tuning into the live-stream via the Sydney Uni Basketball Page here.

Men

Sydney University

Off the back of a 3-1 IV Series win over UTS, the hosts of the invitational tournament will boast two men’s sides in the morning session.

Despite a strong performance in the IV Series, 3×3 basketball is a new challenge for the Sydney Uni men, who will be looking to round out the year in convincing fashion.

Players to watch on Friday will include Olly Bowman, the MVP of the IV Series. Bowman is a prototypical 3×3 player, complimenting a clean outside shot with a quick first step to get to the basket.

Joining Bowman will be Robbie Moore, Nick Feng and Ethan Wilks.

Moore is an electric guard who can also shoot from the outside and get to the basket with ease, while Feng is a skilled big man, capable of creating his own shot off the dribble. Wilks is an experienced 3×3 player, who’s knowledge of the game and well-rounded skillset will also prove a vital asset to the Sydney Uni BLUE team.

Miguel Campos, Liam Humphrey, Tom Roche and Carter Beatty are also set to represent Sydney Uni. All four players in the Sydney Uni GOLD side bring a strong balance of skills including outside shooting, inside scoring, perimeter defending and strong rebounding.

Tom Garlepp, an Australian 3×3 representative, will coach both Sydney Uni men’s sides on the day.

Macquarie University

The undisputed favourites for the men’s competition will be Macquarie University, who remain current UniSport Australia National 3×3 champions following their win at Nationals in 2019.

Macquarie will once again boast a strong lineup including the likes of Ciaron Fitzgerald, Eromon Uadiale, Campbell Green and Jonas Rothrock.

In one of the hottest match-ups of the day, Macquarie University will kick the morning session off at 9am when they face Sydney Uni Blue. The game is a must-watch!

UTS

UTS are set to field a strong 3×3 side for Friday’s event, with the return of IV Series’ stars Reggie Ridlen and Alex Higgins-Titsha set to represent their university.

Opposition sides will have to keep Ridlen quiet from behind the arc if they wish to beat the teal, but when you also consider the threat of Higgins-Titsha from all over the court, UTS will definitely feature heavily come the end of the session.

UTS will also benefit from the strong rebounding and defensive ability of centre Maxim Nesterev. The UTS centre will tower over his opposition on Friday, and gives UTS some added flexibility with the lineups they choose to run with.

Charlie Fortin and Christopher Vera round out the UTS squad for the event.

Women

Sydney University

Sydney Uni will field a strong squad for the afternoon session on Friday, calling on the likes of Sarah Wacher, Annie Henderson, Chloe Morrissey and Emily Cleghorn.

Elite Athlete Program members Wacher and Morrissey will provide strong scoring outputs, with both players able to score from the outside and create their own shots off the dribble.

Henderson and Cleghorn will lead the way on the defensive end, suffocating their opposition’s scoring ability whilst also generating turnovers for Sydney Uni to capitalise on.

Renae Garlepp, an Australian 3×3 representative, will lead the Sydney Uni women’s side from the sideline as coach.

Macquarie University

Macquarie University will field a competitive side, boasting one of the brightest talents playing in Friday’s event.

Abi Curtin will cause headaches for her opposition on both ends of the court thanks to her shot creation and strong defensive capabilities.

Curtin will be supported by Grace Nicholson, Joni Wittwer and Yoveta Tifali Paguno.

UTS

UTS’ women’s side, who are the current UniSport Australia National 3×3 champions, will be the team to beat in Friday’s afternoon session.

On the back of their 4-0 IV Series win over Sydney University, UTS are primed for another big showing on Friday, with Maddy Norris set to lead the way for the teal.

Norris, fresh off a preseason camp with the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames, is lights-out from behind the arc, whilst also possessing a strong rebounding game.

UTS will be without IV Series’ MVP Sherrie Calleia who is currently up in the WNBL hub in North Queensland with the Flames, but have done a great job filling out the rest of their 3×3 roster with Maja Jurlina, Hannah Georges and Gabi Van Dyk.

3pt Shootout

The day’s 3pt shootout will take place at the beginning of the afternoon session at 12.30pm. Each team on the day will submit one player to represent their side and university, with men and women competitors set to battle against each other for ultimate bragging rights.

The full list of competitors in the 3pt shootout can be found below:
