Tom & Renae Garlepp set to coach USYD in IV Series
Sydney Uni Basketball is thrilled to announce both Tom and Renae Garlepp as USYD head coaches in the upcoming inter-varsity series vs UTS.
Both Tom and Renae need little introduction in Basketball NSW circles. During their own professional careers, Tom represented the Sydney Kings for six seasons, including two as captain, while also playing with the Gold Coast Blaze and Adelaide 36ers. Renae played 10 seasons in the WNBL, winning both the competition’s Rookie of the Year award and Grand Final MVP, along with two championships.
Tom retired from professional basketball in 2018 and has quickly made a name for himself as one of Australia’s brightest coaching prospects. Tom has been an assistant coach with the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames program, while also holding roles with Basketball NSW’s state program and the North’s Bears Women’s Waratah One Team.
Renae retired professionally in 2014 and has also found her feet in numerous coaching roles within NSW. Renae has coached within the Basketball NSW state program, while also currently coaching the North’s Bears Women’s Youth League side. Renae is also currently employed as the Director of Basketball at SCECGS Redlands.
Both Tom and Renae were also recently accepted into Basketball Australia’s Emerging Coaches Initiative, which has been devised to provide identified coaches aged 22-35 years with professional development, training, and opportunities for mentoring. The one-year program also includes a raft of development, experiential learning, and mentoring with a focus on developing identified young coaches.
Sydney Uni Basketball is thrilled to have both Tom and Renae coaching in the upcoming inter-varsity series vs UTS, and also look forward to working with them both in future basketball activities on campus.
The inter-varsity series against UTS consists of four rounds, pitting the best student basketballers against each other in both a men’s and women’s competition. The series is set to begin in just under a month’s time, with the first round to be held at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre on Monday 21st September.
