UBL Round 2: USYD Go 4 from 4 on the Road
Round 2 of the University Basketball League (UBL) came to an end yesterday afternoon, with Sydney Uni Basketball rounding out a tough road trip with 4 wins from 4 games.
On Wednesday, the team travelled south to face 150-year intervarsity rivals Melbourne University who were coming off similar results to USYD following Round 1.
Up first, the USYD women put in a dominant display from start to finish, claiming their first win of the competition over Melbourne 45-89. Holly Wills (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Maddie O’Hehir (22 points, 5 steals) starred for USYD.
In the men’s game, USYD were able to grind out a tough 11-point win over Melbourne, with Liam Humphrey (15 points, 19 rebounds) and Parker Dale (16 points, 7 rebounds) leading the way.
On Thursday, both USYD men and women claimed victories over La Trobe University.
Maddie O’Hehir once again shone for USYD, scoring 29 points, including 5-7 from 3pt range. Lara Warner also put in a strong performance, backing up O’Hehir with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
The USYD men fought through OT to eventually get over the top of a persistent La Trobe side. Star forward Ryan Abbott illustrated his all-round excellence, registering 22 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 4 blocks. Robbie Moore’s (16 points, 3 assists) return from injury was headlined with a couple of big baskets down the stretch, helping USYD to the 5-point victory.
The men’s and women’s rosters now turn their attention to their upcoming UBL double-header against Victoria University (Wednesday 12th May) and UTS (Thursday 13th May). More details about live attendance will be made available in the coming weeks.
